What is Domestic Abuse?
Abuse can be defined as harmful and unfair treatment of a repetitive nature from one person to another and domestic is a home/family setting. Domestic abuse occurs usually between two people within an intimate or familial relationship, sometimes there can be multiple perpetrators or victims, this could be intimate partner-partner, parent-child, child-parent, family member to child and vice versa.
It occurs in all parts of the world, regardless of age, gender, sexuality, ability or disability, race or religion.
Abuse comes in all forms and natures including;
-
Physical
-
Emotional
-
Psychological
-
Sexual
-
Financial
-
Economical
-
Honour/religion based
The aim of the game is quite simply power and control.
Perpetrators of abuse use a whole array of tactics, each one designed to disempower and control the victim for as long as the victim serves a purpose. This type of abuse is incredibly clever and calculated, on average victims will make 5-7 serious attempts to leave before they manage to escape. Some victims never manage to escape and instead live this way forever and some sadly lose their lives.
